The popularity of open water swimming is increasing due to the large number of events taking place up and down the country and of open water triathlon events.
Many of us have undertaken open water swimming without realising it - while swimming in the sea on holiday for example - and many of us will remember watching David Walliams Thames River swim for Sport Relief. Closer to home, though, the safest option is to take part in an organised and coached led session, particularly for novices and those new to the sport.
In order to swim open water you will need a wetsuit – open water swimming is not advised in water below 14 degrees. This is why the season for open water swimming runs from May to September with swim and tri clubs. It is also advisable that you also wear goggles and a hat. The minimum age is eight years old.
