Helping to grow Nottinghamshire’s local sporting talent
Nottinghamshire County Council has a proud history of providing support to help grow Nottinghamshire’s sporting talent.
Financial support from Nottinghamshire County Council has helped Ellie Downie from Hucknall make a name for herself in the world of gymnastics.
Ellie, 15, who attends The Rushcliffe School, secured funding to help pay for travel and accommodation costs as well as competition entry fees and equipment such as hand guards.
Her hard work, including training for up to 34 hours a week at the Nottinghamshire Gymnastics Academy, has paid real results with Ellie making British gymnastic history by becoming the first ever senior woman to stand on a European podium gaining a bronze medal in her first senior year at just 15 years of age.
In the next 12 months, Ellie is hoping to be selected for the world championships to be held in October in Glasgow which is an Olympic team qualifying event. She will also be working on improving difficulty in her routines for next year’s competitions including The English and British Championships and Olympic trials as Rio 2016 approaches.
Ellie scooped the Junior Sportsperson of the Year award at the annual Nottinghamshire Sports Awards earlier this year, becoming the first athlete to win the award for the second year in a row.
