Cycling in Nottinghamshire

Rights of way

You can cycle on roads, rights of way and special cycle lanes that are provided in some urban areas. Rights of way open up the countryside to cyclists who can use bridleways, byways and restricted byways.

You shouldn’t cycle on footpaths as these are only for walkers, and you should always give way to walkers or horse riders.

A right of way is a public path. Anyone may 'pass or re-pass' along a right of way, at any time. Find out about rights of way in Nottinghamshire.

Where to cycle

Nottinghamshire has more than 650 miles of countryside and urban cycle routes, and some fantastic cycling-specific facilities.

Transport Direct's cycle journey planner allows you to select the quickest, quietest or even the most recreational cycle route to your destination. It will give you detailed route directions, a map and a visual representation of the steepness of the route. Once you find a route you're happy with, you can download a GPX file that can be used with your GPS device.

We produce guides and maps so you can make the most of what’s on offer.

We also have a searchable directory of walks and rides that contains cycle rides across Nottinghamshire.

Learn to ride a bike

If you've never learned to ride, or just want to improve your skills and confidence, why not book onto one of our adult cycle training sessions, taking place across Nottinghamshire.

Children in Nottinghamshire schools, aged nine and over, are offered cycle training to help them learn to ride a bike safely and with confidence.

We've also put together some guidance on how to teach a child to ride a bike.

Guided cycle rides

Rural Rides is a programme of guided cycle rides delivered by Ridewise, that run throughout the year across the county. All the rides are free, and there are different rides to suit all ages and abilities.

Cycle hire

Cycle hire is available in Nottinghamshire at:

  • Clumber Park

  • Sherwood Pines (this is the closest cycle hire venue to Sherwood Forest - there are no cycle hire facilities available at Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve)

  • Bunneys Bikes, Nottingham.

Cycling safely on the roads

We've put together some useful cycling safety checks and help to ensure you choose the right cycle helmet and wear it properly.

Encountering problems
