St Michael's Environmental Education Centre provides high quality accommodation and facilities in a historic building in the centre of Hathersage village. Surrounded by the inspiring countryside, hills and gritstone edges of the Peak District National Park.

We offer excellent activities and curriculum opportunities for visiting primary and special school groups from Nottinghamshire and further afield. We also invite bookings from other groups who want quality accommodation at the heart of an outstanding area of natural beauty, with many opportunities for recreation and visits on the doorstep. We can also offer a range of activities to non-school groups. Everyone at St Michael's is committed to making your stay as enjoyable, fun and productive as possible.

About St Michael's Environmental Education Centre

Family friendly accommodation in the heart of the Peak District providing an excellent base from which to explore or simply unwind. Comfortable and spacious accommodation, ideal for groups of friends or for a family get together. Suitable for a range of uses for both young people and adults. Situated in Hathersage close to local shops and restaurants with good links to bus and train services.

St Michael's is primarily an Environmental Education centre offering a residential experience for children. Although specifically resourced for Key Stage 2 pupils, bookings are welcome from years 2-6 and a wider age range from special schools.

Teachers/Leaders are guided in their choice of a balanced programme using the curriculum modules available at the centre. Pupils are offered many learning opportunities. Outdoor qualified and experienced teaching support is provided

St Michael’s main centre

St Michael’s offers high quality accommodation for up to 38 people in dormitories sleeping between 2 - 10 people. There is a large TV, DVD player and music system in the lounge area as well as a table football game and pc’s. Games, books and DVDs, primarily aimed at children under 11, are available. St Michael’s cottage

The annexed accommodation sleeps 4-6 people in a double room, a twin room and a double bed settee. It has its own bathroom and fully equipped kitchen area with fridge, cooker and microwave. There is a comfortable lounge/diner with access to a garden, TV and DVD player. Cars can be parked within the grounds of the main centre.
The accommodation units are available separately with each group having sole use of their centre or as one booking. All linen is provided. Self-catering and fully catered options are available. Equipment eg boots and waterproofs are available for hire.

We offer comfortable accommodation for a wide variety of groups throughout the year. We have 38 beds in the Centre and you can also book our next door self catering cottage (for up to 3 to 5 additional people).

Examples of groups who have stayed include; youth groups, church groups, walking and cycling clubs, family get-togethers and reunions, orienteering squad training, AGMS etc.

  • We provide high quality, warm, welcoming accommodation.
  • We are in the Centre of Hathersage with many facilities within walking distance; shops, pubs, cafes, gift shops, rail station, bus routes, open air heated swimming pool
  • Outstanding recreation and leisure facilities on the doorstep and nearby; Walking and Climbing on the world famous Stanage Edge and the other gritstone crags, mountain biking, road cycling, cycle trails and cycle hire, caving, fell running.
  • Visits to Peveril Castle and the Show caves in Castleton, Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, David Mellor factory and museum (in the village), Derwent (Dambusters) Dam.
  • Option to buy in specialist instructors for adventurous activities, such as caving or rock scrambling, at £280 per day including transport to venue and specialist equipment.
  • Are you leading a group of young people? The Centre is an excellent base for outdoor and adventurous activities during the day, together with visits to local attractions. In the evenings the accommodation is perfect for pastoral activities, problem solving, art projects etc. The village has a heated open air swimming pool (April to September). There are opportunities for night walks and a search and rescue activity.

We are always happy to freely provide maps, cycle guides, and advice and information about local recreation and tourist venues.

Self catering cottage

St Michael's cottage is situated in a quiet location offering the perfect place to relax and unwind. It is next door to the centre but entirely separate, so can be booked in conjunction with the centre, or on its own.

The cottage accommodates four people in a double and twin bedroom and has a bed-settee in the sitting room which can accommodate another person.

There is a fully equipped kitchen, a lounge/diner with TV and DVD and an attractive back garden. Bed linen and towels are included and small pets are welcome. Car parking is available at the adjoining centre.
