Spring into Sustainability

Learning Objectives

General:

  • Understand that humans are having an effect on the natural environment
  • Gain knowledge on how to minimise their impact on the environment
  • Understand the principle of food miles and thinks of ways it can be addressed
  • Dig up “landfill rubbish” and discuss the process of bio-degradability
  • Create wind turbines to help understand the links to large scale wind production and CO2 reduction

Specific:

  • Be able to understand the term sustainability
  • Develop appreciation of the environment and personal responsibility for its conservation
  • Understand the hierarchy Reduce, Repair, Re-use, Recycle
  • Discuss different types of sustainable technologies and the need to reduce CO2 production

Introduction

Centre staff will welcome your group and describe the day’s programme, learning objectives, and the health and safety issues. (10 mins)

½ Day Course Programme

Classes will then separate and sessions A and B will be interchangeable am and pm with session A generally led by the centre teacher

Session A

Best led by Centre teacher

  • Question: What is sustainability? (5 mins)
  • Food Miles activity: based around the centre grounds orienteering course (40 mins)
  • Landfill activity: centre grounds (15 mins)
  • Plant pot activity: centre grounds (10 mins)

Session B

  • Question: What is renewable energy? (5 mins)
  • Classroom: Slideshow demonstrating sustainable technologies (10 mins)
  • Building wind turbines activity: classroom based, groups of 3 (50 mins)

Alternative session B

Question: Which is better to do; recycle, reduce or repair? (5 mins)
Plastic bag animals activity: Craft activity in the classroom (50 mins)

Plenary

Back at the Centre the group will reflect on their day and consider how well the learning objectives have been met.


Safety Considerations

Weather Conditions and clothing

Some outdoor clothing and footwear is available at the Centre, but please ensure that children are dressed warmly and have suitable waterproof outerwear. Activities will take place in all but the most severe weather conditions. The centre teacher will contact the group leader if conditions are unsafe for the visit to continue.

Equipment supplied

Wind turbine power point presentation. Food mile, landfill, pot makers, wind turbine and craft activity resources, orienteering maps, first aid kit.

Equipment needed from school

Tray/box to take plant pots home, newspaper, plastic bags (animal craft recycling activity)

Other Information

The actual programme may vary depending on the number and needs of pupils, length of visit and weather conditions.

Differentiation

Food Miles activity: When working out the miles this can vary from generalisations on the distance the food has travelled to actually working out the distance using maps, string and rulers. Wind Turbine activity: For the more able flexibility can be given on the shape and size of the cardboard turbine blades fashioned.
