Unitary local government for Nottinghamshire

In 2018 Nottinghamshire County Council produced its Outline Business Case for Change which included a proposal for a new system of unitary local government in Nottinghamshire that is simpler and more cost-effective. The project was paused whilst further work was carried out on the opportunities for refining the current two-tier structure.

Following the local elections in May 2021 the Council has confirmed that it does not intend to actively pursue unitary local government in Nottinghamshire at this time, with the Council’s priority being recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. The Council remains committed to always getting the best deal for Nottinghamshire residents however, and is keen to keep exploring how it can work more closely and effectively with its local partners.
