How the LIS benefits communities

The Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) helps local communities to be strong, vibrant and resilient. You can find details about Revenue projects and Capital projects approved by the Communities and Place Committee.

Here are just a few examples of how the LIS benefits communities:

Plumtree Cricket Club (Ladies Section)

The project engages women and girls age 13 onward in cricket, developing their health and social well-being. The project provides high-level group and individual coaching to motivate and empower women to stay active and achieve their potential.

Bassetlaw Community and Voluntary Service: Nottinghamshire Together

"Volunteering as a befriender particularly appealed to me because I know that so many people enjoy a natter with a friendly person who isn’t judgemental or critical, and who can offer a listening ear and support. In some cases this is a lifeline to those who are experiencing loneliness and isolation. I wanted to volunteer in something that would help others and I’ve always liked the company of older people; I find them fascinating and enjoy listening to them reminisce!" Volunteer
“I have found that befriending has been a positive and rewarding experience, in that I feel good about myself knowing that I have helped someone - it’s raised my confidence. Befriending does come with its challenges but even in the face of these challenges, I have had the opportunity to learn. My thinking is that if I can support vulnerable people who are in need of some social contact then this can only be a worthwhile thing." Volunteer

Bestwood Village Parish Council

A new outdoor gym and zip-wire has been installed helping to improve access to outdoor facilities, community cohesion and reduce anti-social behaviour by giving young people in the village a focus.

Cotgrave Country Park

A series of new signposts have been created and installed to encourage more visitors to explore Cotgrave Country Park.

Volunteers from the Friends of Cotgrave have arranged these to help walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

Think Children: Emotional Well Being Facilitation

Think Children provides an early intervention service to young children who are displaying signs of emerging social, emotional or behavioural issues.

"I love going to see Think Children and don't want it to end." Child
"My child speaks very highly about Think Children, about having someone to listen and not feel embarrassed or different. They have more confidence and raised self-esteem." Parent

Transform Training Ltd

A registered charity delivering programmes and training to support vulnerable and disadvantaged young people in our local communities.

A Transform Training service user in their early 20s who lives with a range of disabilities including Cerebral Palsy, making it difficult to walk distances and do everyday tasks such as bathing, opening containers and pressing buttons:

"It gets me out of the house and I get to see my friends. When I first started I was quiet and now I am chatty and help everyone. It has given me more confidence and leadership skills." Service User

Let us know about your publicity plans

Has your organisation benefited from Local Improvement Scheme funding? Remember to let us know about your events or any publicity plans in advance (ideally 8 weeks) by completing the publicity notification form. We'd love to share your stories about how LIS funding is benefiting local communities.

We know everyone is keen to promote their fantastic work helping the community, but please note:

The Council recognises that publicity plans may be impacted by the Coronavirus restrictions, therefore, organisations will need to ensure that any socially-distanced publicity events are fully in line with the  Government guidance at the time of the event.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic, organisations may need to reschedule or cancel their proposed event – and this may be at short notice.

Please continue to send in your publicity requests via the online publicity notification form.  and a member of the communications team will be in contact to discuss suitable dates where this is practical.

Any subsequent changes  or postponement to publicity events  should be emailed to LIS@nottscc.gov.uk
