On the day
Timing is crucial
Timing is crucial, should you arrive late it may not be possible to conduct your ceremony that day. Your ceremony should start at the appointed time unless there are exceptional circumstances where we have been informed of the change and it has been agreed to by us.
We ask that you and your guests arrive 20 minutes before the start time.
The registrar is required to check your personal details before they are recorded accurately in the marriage register. Therefore, you must both be interviewed prior to the start of the ceremony. It is important that you check the information carefully during this pre-ceremony interview. If you wish to do this separately, we will see one of you 20 minutes before and the other 10 minutes before the ceremony is due to start.
It is your responsibility to ensure that all guests are aware of our expectations and have prior knowledge of where the venue is situated.
Your civil ceremony must be witnessed by two people who can speak and understand English and who are fully aware of the nature and meaning of the ceremony.
Conventionally, we ask that a witness should be over the age of 16. The registration service is not able to provide witnesses for you - they must be your witnesses and cannot be employees of the registration service.
Recording your special day
We know that you will wish to look back on this important day and relive your treasured memories. Therefore, we are happy for you to record your special day. Please discuss this in advance with your registration office and with the registrar on the day.
Registering your marriage
At the end of the ceremony the registrar will ask each of you to check your own personal details very carefully in the marriage register before you sign it to say that the information is correct. We appreciate that you will probably be nervous and excited on your special day, but it is important, and in your own interests, that you check the information very closely. Any details found to be incorrect at a later date will require a formal and lengthy correction procedure, as well as a fee of £90 for the Registrar General to consider your application, which may or may not be successful.
Our friendly and committed staff are here to guide you through the planning and legalities of your big day. We are always happy to answer queries, give support throughout the civil ceremony registration process and guide you through all you say and do.
We want to do everything we can to ensure your celebration is all you would wish for.
