Getting support and advice

If you are a member of a family where a child has been adopted, our Support After Adoption team offers support, advice, information and counselling to birth relatives of any age and at any stage of the adoption.

You may need to talk over some feelings of unresolved loss or the impact of receiving news about your child, or you may feel anxious about the lack of information on how your child is doing in their adoptive home.

Also available is the Independent Birth Family Counselling Service, a confidential service for birth relatives of children placed or in the process of being placed for adoption. You can contact access this service via the social worker involved with your case.

A useful source of information is the leaflet produced by the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) called ‘Child From the Past: England and Wales. Information for parents who place their child for adoption'.

This covers the adoption laws and services, getting in touch with an adopted child and dealing with difficulties. See website: www.baaf.org.uk/node/2303, or call tel: 0207 421 2604.
