Local Housing Allowance

Description

This is a way of calculating Housing Benefit entitlement for private tenants. It does not apply to Local Authority or Housing Association tenants. You will be awarded a set amount of Housing Benefit according to the area you live in and the size of your household. If the property you choose has a higher rent than the LHA rate, you must meet the difference yourself.

You cannot claim Local Housing Allowance, instead you must claim Housing Benefit.

  • Long-term ill / disabled
  • State pension age
  • Carers
  • Unemployed / part time workers
  • Have a disabled child
  • Families
Who qualifies for the benefit?
You may be entitled to this if you are a private tenant. You will be awarded a set amount of Housing Benefit according to the area you live in and the size of your household.
How to apply
You must claim Housing Benefit who will then determine whether you are entitled to the Local Housing Allowance or Housing Benefit.
