Nottinghamshire County and Nottingham City declaration on tobacco control

Smoking is the leading cause of premature death, disease and disability in our communities. Sign the declaration on tobacco control and demonstrate your organisation's commitment to addressing tobacco related issues and improving the health of your workforce.

An extension of the Local Government declaration on tobacco control 2013, our declaration was relaunched in 2022 and aligns with the Government’s ambition to be smokefree by 2030, and encourages partners to commit to taking action on tobacco.

The declaration is in line with the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire’s Strategic Smoking and Tobacco Alliance’s clear, shared ambition to see smoking amongst adults reduced to 5% or lower by 2035 across Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City.

What can you do?

Signing the declaration and developing an action plan helps the organisation to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of their employees and service users.

Benefits to your organisation:

  • Improving health of staff and service users
  • Saving money by reducing sickness absence
  • Protecting your employees, customers and clients from exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Increasing productivity
  • Improving the environments around workspaces by reducing cigarette litter
  • Reducing cleaning costs
  • Sends a strong message to local communities that you are playing an active part in reducing the harm caused by tobacco.

How can we support you?

  • We have developed a declaration Toolkit which provides further guidance and examples of actions.
  • Online training for staff in very brief advice and having healthy conversations, either through the National Centre for Smoking Cessation Training (NCSCT) or Making Every Contact Count
  • Support for those wishing to stop smoking provided by Your Health Notts (ABL) (Nottinghamshire County). A new service will be in place for Nottingham City residents from 1 April 2024. These services offer free, friendly support to anyone age 12+ who wants to give up smoking.
  • The Alliance aims to share learning from elsewhere and identify local actions for organisations.
  • Receive information on smoking and tobacco use in relation to particular topic areas for example smoking and mental health.

Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council, district and borough Councils, Nottingham University Hospitals and Nottinghamshire Police are examples of local organisations who have signed the declaration and developed action plans.
