Attendance Allowance

Attendance Allowance is a non taxable weekly benefit for people over 65 who need looking after because of an illness or disability.

Attendance Allowance is not means test - your income and savings are not considered. Receiving it may entitle you to other benefits and it is available whether you live alone or with other people.

It is paid at two rates depending on how much are you need:

  • lower rate - £57.30 per week
  • higher rate - £85.60 per week.

People who are terminally ill receive the higher rate and these claims are dealt with quicker. This is known as claiming under special rules and the GOV.UK website has more information about how to do this. 

Who can apply

This benefit is aimed at the:

  • long-term ill
  • disabled
  • state pension age.

You must:

  • be 65 or over
  • have needed care and support for at least six months
  • expect to need help for at least a further six months.
