The process

There are a number of steps you will need to go through to apply to be a Shared Lives carer:

Enquiry / expression of interest

Get in touch using our online enquiry form or by telephone on 0300 500 80 80 to let us know you are interested in becoming a Shared Lives carer.

Conversation with Shared Lives team

We’ll have a chat over the phone to answer any initial questions you might have about the role.

Home visit

One of our Shared Lives Co-ordinators will visit you in your home to understand more about where you live and discuss the type of support you would be able to offer.

Application

We will help you to fill in some paperwork to enter the assessment process, including all the information we’ve gathered from our earlier chats and visit.

Assessment and training

During this stage, we will do some more paperwork and checks including DBS and references. There will also be training sessions to give you a good insight into what it’s like to be a Shared Lives carer.

Approval

All applications are assessed by an independent panel who make the final decision.

Carers are carefully matched with the people they support to make sure that they feel comfortable with each other before agreeing to spend time together.

No previous caring experience is needed and full training is provided.
