Handy person adaptation service

The handy person adaptation service provides help with:

  • essential minor adaptations
  • small practical jobs.

It is available to people living in Nottinghamshire (except the City of Nottingham) who are either aged 60 or over or disabled.

The basic charge for adaptation work is £15 and you can have up to £250 worth of adaptations supplied and fitted in a single job. The basic charge for handy person jobs is £15, but you need to supply all materials for the job. All charges and limits are subject to change.

The work is carried out by professional traders from our approved trader register regulated by Trading Standards.

Major adaptations

A major adaptation to you home is usually one costing more than £1,000. It can include:

  • widening doors
  • installing stair lifts or ceiling hoists
  • ramps - consideration may be given if a person's mobility is dependent on the use of a wheelchair (indoors/outdoors) and qualifies for an NHS wheelchair or the person, or anyone caring for them, is at risk from the current method of access.

If you are a disabled person who needs help to live independently, you might be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant to help fund the adaptations to your home. For more information see our Disabled Facilities Grant Factsheet [PDF].

If you are planning to pay for the work yourself, and you are using a private company, make sure you agree a price beforehand. Our trading standards page can offer advice if you have any disputes.

When adaptations can't help

Some homes aren't suitable for adaptations and some people still won't be able to manage in their home even if adaptations have been done. We can advise you about what is involved in moving to a more suitable property.

Our somewhere to live page gives more information about housing options.
