Steps to adoption
Adoption is where you become the legal parent of a child or children. If you are at least 21 years old and can provide a permanent, stable and caring home, your application or enquiry will be welcomed.
On this page we will explain the process of becoming an adoptive parent.
You can make an initial enquiry about adopting using our online form.
- Step 1: Registration of interest
- Step 2: Assessment and training
- Step 3: Adoption panel
- Step 4: Matching
- Step 5: Adoption order
Step 5: Adoption order
At the point the Adoption Order is granted, you acquire full legal parental responsibility for your child, and the local authority and birth parent no longer has any parental responsibility.
Before the child is legal adopted, we will work closely to ensure all the child’s needs are met. You will have the support of the child’s social worker and your adoption social worker.
After you have legally adopted the child our support will be available to help with any adoption issues throughout the child’s life.
