Speed bumps, humps, plateaus and road narrowing chicanes are all types of traffic calming.
We use traffic calming to slow down vehicles in busy neighbourhoods, outside shops and schools.
Government research has shown that at 40 mph, 9 out of 10 pedestrians are killed if a car hits them.
In contrast at 20mph, the number of pedestrians killed in collisions is almost halved to 5 out of 10.
We only use traffic calming when there have been accidents involving pedestrians, where speeding is a problem and there is strong support from local householders. For more information, contact your local highways office.
