Speed limits are there to make our roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
We make sure that speed limits are appropriate for the local road conditions. This is to make sure that most drivers will see why they need to keep to the limit without the need for police enforcement using mobile or fixed speed cameras.
All speed limits in Nottinghamshire are set using Government criteria which look at the following factors:
- existing speed of the majority of vehicles so that the most appropriate limit is chosen;
- character of the road and its immediate environment. Drivers will expect to see speed limits in built up areas but not in rural areas.
- number of injury accidents (considering the amount of traffic and length of road). This will be compared with a national average to see whether a change in speed limit will improve road safety.
