The County Council is a member of the Nottinghamshire Safety Camera Partnership. The Partnership includes Nottingham City Council, The Highways Agency, Nottinghamshire Police and Her Majesty’s Courts Service.
The Partnership uses a combination of fixed, time over distance, mobile and red light cameras to reduce road casualties, enforce speed limits and prevent red light running at known accident trouble spots.
Government guidelines state that fixed cameras can only be used where there have been at least three fatal or serious collisions per kilometre in the last three calendar years and where the majority of drivers are exceeding the speed limit.
In Nottinghamshire there are 37 speed camera sites. They have helped reduce the numbers of killed and seriously injured people by 48% in the past 5 years.
Safety cameras are only used where no other casualty reduction measure is suitable.
