Some children have special needs that require some extra support to help them get the most out of their time at school.
The majority of children with special educational needs are taught in mainstream schools, and we give schools extra money to help them.
Your child will be assessed to work out what your child needs to learn, how to teach this and who will help. The assessment of special educational needs may be done by the school's Special Educational Needs co-ordinator (SENCO) with support from the educational psychologist service.
This assessment will help the school plan how best to teach your child and what extra resources and support are needed. Further assessments will be done to make sure your child is achieving their predicted learning targets.
