Rights of way offer a great way for walkers, cyclists and horseriders to enjoy the countryside at a relaxed pace, get to school, work or the shops.
There are four types of rights of way marked with different coloured markers:
- Footpaths – marked with yellow discs – should only be used on foot
- Bridleways – marked with blue discs - can be used on foot, horseback and pedal cycles
- Restricted byways – marked with purple discs - are open to walkers, cyclists, horse riders and horse drawn carriages
- Byways – marked with red discs - are open to all traffic.
We are responsible for maintaining the rights of way network in Nottinghamshire to make sure paths are:
- clearly signed and well maintained
- safe to use with no obstructions like crops, ploughed land etc
- listed on the Definitive Map, which provides a legal record of all rights of way in Nottinghamshire.
If you find any problems or obstructions on rights of way you can report the problem online.
