Right to roam

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CROW) gave people more freedom to walk on open countryside. The "right to roam" applies to open access land, which is land that has been designated open to the public for walking. Not all land is open access and open access does not apply to cycling or horseriding.

When on open access land walkers do not have to keep to the line of a path, they are free to roam away from the path and explore further afield. The Nottinghamshire countryside is mostly agricultural so there is little open access. You can find out which areas are open access by visiting our open access land web pages.
