Quiet roads in rural areas can be designated as quiet lanes, where motorists have to share their right of way with other road users like pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
Car drivers will be expected to drive slowly in recognition of the shared use of the road. Non-essential traffic will be encouraged to use busier roads by changes to the local road signs.
There are several designated quiet lanes in Nottinghamshire including East Leake and Sutton Bonnington.
