Household waste collected from Nottinghamshire homes is either buried in the ground at one of the county's landfill sites or burnt at the Eastcroft incinerator in Nottingham.
For every tonne of waste buried in a landfill site the County Council pays Landfill Tax – currently £24 per tonne – to the Government. A share of this money is given back to invest in local community projects.
