Landfill sites are used to dispose of rubbish from households and businesses. The rubbish is carefully buried in the ground and is then landscaped with grass and trees. Any gases produced by the rubbish as it decays are monitored and piped to the surface for safety. The gases are sometimes used to produce electricity.
In the future landfill sites will not be used to dispose of rubbish. New EU legislation requires councils to look at more environmentally friendly ways of disposing of rubbish like recycling and incineration.
Landfill sites in Nottinghamshire are operated and maintained by Waste Recycling Group, a commercial company, on behalf of the County and district councils.
