Grass verges are cut a minimum of four times a year in urban areas and a minimum of twice a year in rural areas, or as required to maintain visibility.
The grass is cut for safety reasons – to make sure drivers at junctions etc. can clearly see other road users from their vehicles. It is not cut to make the verge look tidy.
In rural areas, visibility splays at junctions are cut a minimum of twice a year or as required to maintain visibility.
Grass growing around the base of streetlights and signposts etc. is trimmed twice a year.
