Food safety

Around five million people in England and Wales suffer from food poisoning every year.

If you run a food business you have a responsibility to make sure that you put your customers' health first.

The Food Standards Agency, www.food.gov.uk provides help and advice to businesses involved in the food industry.

The Food Safety Act 1990 makes it an offence to sell or process food for sale which is harmful to health. It also places a legal responsibility on businesses to make sure that they operate in a hygienic way.

Your local district council environmental health team is responsible for enforcing the act.
