Byways

Byways are one of four different rights of way for getting out and about in the countryside.

There are two different types of byway:

  • a byway open to all traffic (BOTAT)  - these are marked with a red arrow and are open to all traffic
  • restricted byways - these are marked with a plum coloured arrow and are open to walkers, cyclists, horse riders and horse-drawn carriages. They are not open to motorised vehicles

Our Finding Your Way guide [PDF 2116KB] includes information on your rights when using rights of way in Nottinghamshire and how to identify themon a map.
